The History of the Place

The Origin of the Project

Falling in love with the Basque Country, Cédric Béchade decided to settle there and pursue his life project. He spent four years searching for the ideal place, the one that would suit him and reflect his values. When he discovered L’Auberge Basque in Helbarron, in the commune of Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, he knew that it would be here, in this old farmhouse dating back to 1672 and owned by three sisters (still neighbors to this day), that he and Marion would build their life.

Driven by the desire to preserve and revive the spirit of the place, Marion and Cédric Béchade wanted to breathe new life into the auberge, infusing it with their values: a mix of simplicity, proximity, and elegance.

We wanted a place that resembled us, not too big, but with immense potential.

A Contemporary Inn in the Heart of the Basque Country

After purchasing it in 2006, the couple embarked on a renovation and major construction works, carried out by a team of local artisans, with a single guiding principle: to blend history and modernity. They reduced the number of rooms from 22 to 12 but preserved everything that could be kept in the foundations. They brought this beautiful 18th-century building to life, mastering the balance between tradition and modernity, with the most prominent example being the iconic Basque Country facade with its timber framing on one side, and on the other, a modern facade with balconies overlooking the mountains.

The Spirit of the Place

For 189years, the couple has turned this place into the contemporary inn of their dreams: a family home where they welcome guests with their vision and roots, all within a highly developed eco-responsible approach.

A true cocoon, the result of thoughtful reflection between Marion and Cédric Béchade, L’Auberge Basque embodies the values cherished by the finest charming establishments: a high level of service, exceptional gastronomy, and a unique concept of the Art of Living. By joining the prestigious club of 552 “Relais & Châteaux” members, L’Auberge Basque invites its guests to share in a singular experience.
